- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch cake pans.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- In another bowl, beat butter and both sugars until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in pumpkin puree.
- Gradually alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk into the wet mixture until smooth.
- Divide the batter evenly into pans and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Let cakes cool completely before frosting.
- To make frosting, beat cream cheese and butter together. Add powdered sugar gradually and mix until fluffy, then stir in vanilla.
- Frost the cooled cakes, stacking them as desired. Decorate with autumn leaves, berries, or Thanksgiving-themed toppers.

Notes
