Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup black food coloring for frosting
  • 1/2 cup orange food coloring for frosting
  • 1/4 cup candy eyeballs for decoration

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract and milk until smooth.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared pans and smooth the tops with a spatula.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Once the cakes are cooled, frost the cakes with black and orange frosting. Use the candy eyeballs to decorate the top and create spooky faces or designs.
