Ingredients
  

Cake Batter
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour sifted
  • 1 3/4 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder dark
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 eggs room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
Frosting & Decoration
  • 3 cups buttercream frosting black, red, and purple food coloring
  • 1/2 cup fondant decorations skulls, bats, or gothic elements

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch cake pans.
  2. Cream together butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla.
  3. Sift flour, cocoa, and baking soda. Alternate adding dry mixture and buttermilk to wet mixture until smooth.
  4. Divide batter between pans and bake 30–35 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean.
  5. Cool cakes completely before frosting with colored buttercream.
  6. Decorate with gothic elements such as fondant skulls, bats, or castles.
