Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup Cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1/2 cup Butter
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons Black food coloring
  • 1 1/2 cups Powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Milk

Equipment

  • Cake pans
  • Mixer

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a mixing bowl, sift together 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 3/4 cup of cocoa powder, and 1 teaspoon of baking soda.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 cup of sugar, 2 eggs, and 1/2 cup of melted butter. Add 1 cup of buttermilk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, mixing well.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until smooth. Add 2 teaspoons of black food coloring to achieve a dark, Gothic hue.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let the cakes cool completely.
  6. For the frosting, beat together 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk, and a pinch of black food coloring until smooth and creamy.
  7. Once the cakes are cooled, frost them with the black frosting and enjoy your gothic masterpiece!
