Method
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a football-shaped cake pan.
- In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 3/4 cup of cocoa powder, and 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder.
- In a separate bowl, cream together 1/2 cup of butter and 1 1/2 cups of sugar until light and fluffy. Add 3 eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
- Alternate adding the dry ingredients and 1 cup of buttermilk to the butter mixture, mixing until just combined.
- Pour the batter into the prepared football-shaped pan and smooth the top. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool completely.
- Once the cake has cooled, frost it with chocolate buttercream frosting. Use white fondant to create football laces, and shape them into the classic football pattern. You can also color the fondant with green food coloring to create a football field effect.
- For added flair, pipe lines and numbers onto the cake to mimic a football field, and garnish with additional fondant decorations for a fun and personalized touch.
