Method
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a football-shaped cake pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of cocoa powder, and 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder.
- In a separate bowl, cream 1/2 cup of butter with 1 1/2 cups of sugar until light and fluffy. Add 3 eggs, one at a time, and stir in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
- Alternate adding the dry ingredients and 1 cup of buttermilk to the butter mixture, mixing until just combined. Stir in 1/2 cup of chocolate chips.
- Pour the batter into the prepared football-shaped pan and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan before transferring to a wire rack.
- Once the cake is completely cool, prepare the frosting. Tint the buttercream frosting with brown food coloring to create a football-like color.
- Frost the entire cake with the brown buttercream frosting. Use white food coloring and a piping bag to create the white laces on the football.
