Ingredients
  

Cake
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs lightly beaten
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
Frosting
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar sifted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped pecans optional

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 13x18-inch sheet pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a saucepan, combine butter, cocoa powder, and water. Bring to a boil while stirring, then remove from heat.
  4. Pour the hot mixture over the dry ingredients and mix until combined.
  5. Add buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Stir until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20–25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. For the frosting, melt butter in a saucepan with cocoa powder and milk. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  8. Remove from heat, then whisk in powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth. Add pecans if desired.
  9. Pour the warm frosting over the cake immediately after baking, spreading evenly to cover the surface.
  10. Allow to cool before slicing into squares and serving.
