Cake Batter
  • 1.75 cups all-purpose flour sifted
  • 0.75 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 tsp baking powder
  • 1.5 tsp baking soda
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water or hot coffee for deeper flavor
Chocolate Frosting
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 2.5 cups powdered sugar sifted
  • 0.75 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • chocolate shavings or chips for garnish

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar. Mix well.
  3. Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Beat until smooth and combined.
  4. Slowly pour in hot water (or coffee) and mix until the batter is thin and glossy.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between pans and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  6. Cool cakes for 10 minutes in pans, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. For frosting: beat butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar, cocoa, cream, and vanilla. Beat until light and fluffy.
  8. Frost the cooled cakes, layer them, and garnish with chocolate chips or shavings on top.
