Ingredients

  • 2 large Yellow onions
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 tbsp Butter
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Sugar optional, to enhance sweetness

Method

  1. Peel and slice the onions thinly. Set aside.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat until melted and hot.
  3. Add the sliced onions to the pan, stirring to coat with the oil and butter.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for about 40 minutes, or until they are soft and caramelized. Add salt and sugar (if using) halfway through the cooking process to help enhance the caramelization.
  5. Once the onions are golden brown and deeply caramelized, remove from heat and serve immediately or store for later use.
