Method
 

  1. Prepare a fully cooled cake before starting. Trim any uneven tops using a serrated knife to create a smooth surface.
  2. In a large bowl, beat butter with an electric mixer until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing on low speed until combined.
  3. Add cream and vanilla extract, then beat on high speed for 2–3 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  4. Divide the frosting into bowls and tint with different colors using food gels if desired.
  5. Apply a thin crumb coat over the cake to seal in crumbs. Chill for 15 minutes.
  6. Spread a smooth final layer of frosting using a spatula or offset spreader. Rotate the cake on a turntable for even coverage.
  7. Use piping bags with decorative tips to create borders, rosettes, or swirls. Add sprinkles, pearls, or other edible decorations to finish.
  8. Refrigerate the cake for at least 20 minutes before serving to set the frosting.
